Georgia Harkness

The Remaking of a Liberal Theologian

Product Description
Georgia Harkness (1891–1974) was a Methodist theologian who taught at Garrett Biblical Institute and the Pacific School of Religion. In fact, she was the first American woman to teach theology at the seminary level and was a leader in the ecumenical movement. The author of more than thirty books, Harkness strove to make theology accessible to the laity. This book is a compilation of some of her theological writing from early in her career (1929–1942), drawing from articles and essays that appeared in publications such as The Christian Century, Religion in Life, and Christendom. Although her theology shifted somewhat during these years, Harkness held fast to her belief that liberal theology would remain “the basic American theology,” a prediction that was entirely out of step in the neoorthodox 1930s but is growing more credible today.
