In addition to problems faced by others, African American married couples face some very special issues. Specifically, African American couples must cope with the daily stress of dealing with oppressive and debilitating racial hostility and discrimination; the diversity of background, color, and tradition in the broad spectrum of their community; and special financial problems. They must also deal with different values, rituals, and expectations regarding gender roles; the impact of extended kin and the church; and special parenting problems regarding the protection and promotion of their children in a society that fears and oppresses them. Useful, practical, and knowledgeable, this unique book provides research, clinical experience, and specific examples of folks with whom readers can identify.
